Becoming a trainer/coordinator
The decision to appoint and train a Reading Recovery trainer/coordinator is taken at national level, and requires a one year full-time professional development programme and ongoing, self directed part-time study at Doctoral level. This includes teaching children in Reading Recovery.
The Institute of Education (IOE), University of London is internationally accredited as a centre for the training of Reading Recovery trainer/coordinators. Training is also available in New Zealand and the USA (The Ohio State University and Texas Woman's University).
The one year full-time professional development programme includes:
- Principles and practice underpinning Reading Recovery with 'hard to teach' children in many, varied settings
- Principles and practice underpinning professional change and development of already skilled adults
- Curriculum design and development
- Advocacy and working at system level to achieve change, secure sustainability and challenge preconceptions about low attaining children
- Communicating and disseminating information about Reading Recovery at every level in education systems
The training combines both academic and practical experiences of a particularly intensive and demanding nature.
Ongoing professional development is provided within the trainer/coordinator team and internationally through the International Reading Recovery Trainer Organisation (IRRTO).
